Monday
Colonial Williamsburg, Jamestown, and homeward
We got up early today, packed all of our things, ate a quick delicious breakfast and hit the road. We had a lot to cram into one day and still make it to Knoxville. It’s unfortunate that we had so little time because this was the place I was waiting for.
We went first to Williamsburg. I wasn’t sure what I was expecting but we got there about 15 minutes before all the shops started opening and the town came to life. The visitors center is a quarter mile from the actual town so you can take a bus or walk. After paying $80 to get in, we walked the quarter mile back in to time to Colonial Williamsburg. This place really needs at least a whole day to explore. It is an original area with some original buildings from 1760’s. It was a living museum where people lived and built and crafted in each building. All tours are done by volunteers. It was a super cool town. No cars drive through, just horse drawn carriages. And walking people of course. They had blacksmith’s, leather workers, an armory, shops, taverns, homes, a Capitol, a governor's palace, all kinds of fun things.
When it started to get more full of people and a little more hot outside, we decided to head to find lunch out of town so it wasn’t an arm and a leg. And Easton was getting grouchy. He fell asleep from the time we left to the time we got to the car. Stink. Luckily the transfer from stroller to car seat went well and he fell back asleep.
We grabbed a quick lunch and headed for Jamestown. We took our turns going to the bathroom in the visitors center and changing into cooler clothes. We each made the mistake of putting on warmer clothes thinking it would be cooler since our phones said it was 50 degrees out. LIES IT WAS 90 something. It gave Easton more time to sleep. Being impatient and having to get on the road for Knoxville. We woke him up and put him in light shorts and took his second shirt off. It was HOT out. It was a short walk to Jamestown. It was a lot smaller than you would think. But I imagine they weren’t there in large numbers being the first settlement here. It was a pretty cool place. And even cooler that we were there on the 411th anniversary of the first landing!! We didn’t plan that at all! The church that was standing was currently being excavated and researched, trying to find the original foundation from the 1640’s. It was fun to watch a real life dig happening in front of you.
We let Easton get his wiggles out and walk the museum and grounds. After our patience ran out we loaded up and headed for Knoxville. We left a little later than planned, but there was no way to cram that much into such a short time. We made it to our hotel around 10:30(?) and made it to bed probably around 11:30. Easton was so tired he just threw a huge fit until Jeff made it with the pack n play and went instantly to sleep.
We died not much after.
